My Credit Card or Debit Card Payment is Being Rejected And It Should Work

Solution

If your payment is being declined take a careful look at the red decline message. In most cases it will tell you exactly what is wrong. If you are still unclear on why your card is not being accepted, here are a few of the most common reasons payment card transactions fail:

  • Incorrect Address Information: Transactions declined for AVS Mismatch and Bad Address often are the result of using the wrong address when making a payment. You must use your billing address. Your billing address is the address where you payment card's monthly statement is mailed.
  • Incorrect Card Info: Cards declined for CVV2 Mismatch and Invalid Card are the result of either the credit card number being incorrectly entered or the CVV2 number on the back of the card being mistyped.
  • Exceeding Daily Limits and Maximum Transaction Size: Recently Visa, MasterCard and Discover added several new limits to debit and other payment cards. Even though you have enough money available to pay, your card may be limited to a maximum daily spending amount or to a maximum transaction size. If your payment is declined with a code of "DO NOT HONOR" chances are you have exceeded your daily spending limit or maximum transaction. Most banks will let you adjust your daily limit and maximum transaction with a phone call or visit to a local branch.
  • Holds. Due to the frequency of security breaches at major retailers, it is possible that your card has been put on hold due to a "disclosure". Your card's issuing institution can quickly inform your of what to do in this situation.
